Rajasthan police have successfully dismantled a Pakistan-based heroin smuggling operation using drones to deliver drugs into Punjab, arresting a key middleman, Gurmej Singh, in Sriganganagar. Singh, who acted as a liaison between Pakistan suppliers and local smugglers, revealed that he received Rs 50,000 per consignment of 1-2 kg heroin, with each kilogram valued at Rs 6 crore.
Singh confessed to facilitating over 4 kg of heroin, worth Rs 24 crore, during October 2024 alone. His role included coordinating multiple deliveries, one of which was disrupted when a drone crashed on October 16 near the India-Pakistan border. This led to Singh’s arrest by Rajasthan police.
Authorities also identified Singh’s relatives as part of the network. The operation underscores how smugglers exploit local villagers, offering modest payments to act as middlemen in these high-risk operations. Despite the arrests, the masterminds behind the racket remain largely shielded, making it difficult for authorities to capture them.
This case highlights the growing use of drones for drug smuggling and the challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling cross-border narcotic trade.
