Indian and US troops are currently participating in the 20th edition of Exercise Yudh Abhyas at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. This joint military drill aims to strengthen the operational readiness and interoperability between the two nations.
Key Drills and Exercises
During the exercise, both armies engaged in a variety of drills, including targeting small drones with trained birds, firing howitzers, heavy machine guns, and mortars, as well as showcasing their armored vehicles. Attack helicopters, such as the Apache and Indian ALH Dhruv variants, also took part in the exercise, focusing on counterterrorism operations.
Strengthening Interoperability
Major Akansha Rajput, part of the Core of Engineers, highlighted the importance of counter-IED techniques and obstacle breaching in supporting infantry during counterterrorism operations. She emphasized how these drills have helped both armies refine and polish their operational techniques.
Captain Tushar Sanam, a Special Forces operative, underscored the focus on improving interoperability and operational readiness between the Indian and US contingents. He noted that equipment, troops, and intelligence are key elements for mission success, which were addressed during the exercise.
Building US-India Relations
Captain Saima Durrani, Civil Affairs Officer in the US Army, emphasized the strong friendship between the two nations, stating that the camaraderie shared between the Indian and US armies is unique and irreplaceable.
Ongoing Exercise
Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2024 began on September 9 and will continue until September 22. It is an annual event held alternately in India and the US since 2004, with the goal of enhancing joint military capabilities for counterterrorism operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
This exercise is a testament to the growing military partnership and shared objectives between India and the United States.
