Recent research highlights the alarming effects of rising temperatures in the Marwar region of West Rajasthan on infants’ health. The extreme heat is leading to severe dehydration, resulting in kidney damage and neurological complications, including blood clots, epilepsy, and paralysis.
Study Findings and Recommendations
A collaborative study conducted by SN Medical College (including departments of medicine, pediatric neurology, and radiology), AIIMS Bhatinda, and Aston University, UK, involved 74 infants facing kidney and brain health issues. The study revealed that the risk of brain blood clots, which affects only 2-3 infants per 100 globally, is significantly elevated in this region—about 16 infants in western Rajasthan are likely to suffer from this condition due to excessive heat and dehydration.
Dr. Manish Parakh, a pediatric neurologist at SN Medical College, noted that 50-60% of infants in the area are exhibiting brain complications, which can lead to conditions like epilepsy and paralysis. Despite the significant impact on brain health, most medical attention is focused on kidney issues, often overlooking critical neurological symptoms.
Importance of Early Diagnosis
The research emphasized the need for regular brain MRI screenings during the summer months to detect any blood clotting in infants’ arteries or veins. Infants affected by dehydration and resulting complications may experience speech delays, intellectual disabilities, and epilepsy symptoms well into their early childhood years if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
Bhanu Pratap Rathore, an assistant professor in the pediatric department and another team member, recommended that pregnant women have regular medical check-ups to mitigate risks to their babies, both before and after birth.
